The Rongai Route is one of the least trafficked paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, providing a unique and quieter experience. Starting on the northern side of the mountain, this route offers a gradual ascent through diverse landscapes, including rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. The 7-day trek allows for proper acclimatization, maximizing your chances of reaching the summit in good health.
Activity: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Meet your guide for a trek briefing, gear check, and preparations for your journey. Relax and rest before the trek begins.
Activity: Begin your trek from Nalemoru Gate, following a scenic path through dense rainforest. The trail offers opportunities to spot wildlife, including monkeys and birds. After a steady ascent, you will arrive at Simba Camp for an overnight stay.
Activity: A shorter trekking day, today focuses on gradual ascent while adjusting to the altitude. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone and provides views of Mawenzi Peak. Reach Kikelewa Camp, where you’ll relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Activity: Trek across the alpine desert to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled beneath Mawenzi Peak. The scenery becomes more rugged, and the trek offers a taste of what’s to come on summit day. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing to the higher altitude.
Activity: The trek today crosses the saddle, a vast, barren plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo. The gradual ascent leads to Kibo Hut, where you’ll rest and prepare for the summit attempt. Early dinner and sleep will be essential to recharge for the summit push.
Activity: The summit push starts at midnight, climbing steeply through icy terrain to Gilman’s Point and then to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for rest.
Activity: The final descent takes you back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Once at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate. Return to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha to celebrate the achievement of reaching the roof of Africa.
