Day 0: Arrival in Arusha or Moshi

Activity: Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. Meet your trekking guide for a briefing, gear check, and final preparations. Rest and acclimatize before the trek begins.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

  • Accommodation: Umbwe Cave Camp

  • Distance: 10 km

Activity: The trek begins at Umbwe Gate with a steep climb through dense rainforest. The trail is narrow and rugged, leading through towering trees and thick undergrowth. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for dinner and rest.

Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp
  • Elevation: 2,850m to 3,950m
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Altitude Gained: 1,100m

 

Activity: The trail steepens as you ascend through the forest into the heath zone. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens up, offering stunning views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Day 3: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m) via Karanga Camp (4,035m)

  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp
  • Elevation: 3,950m to 4,035m (Karanga) to 4,673m
  • Distance: 9 km
  • Altitude Gained: 723m

 

Activity: Start with an exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, followed by a trek through rocky terrain to Karanga Camp. After lunch, continue ascending through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp, where you’ll rest before the summit attempt.

Day 4: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) & descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

  • Accommodation: Mweka Camp
  • Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m (summit) to 3,100m
  • Distance: 17 km
  • Altitude Gained: 1,222m (ascent), 2,795m (descent)

 

Activity: The final ascent begins at midnight, trekking through ice and scree to Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. Witness a spectacular sunrise before descending to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 5: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Return to Moshi/Arusha

  • Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi/Arusha
  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Altitude Lost: 1,460m

 

Activity: A final descent through the rainforest leads to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a celebratory meal and relaxation after your Kilimanjaro adventure.
